Term: Transfer Control Protocol (TCP)

A routing protocol upon which the Internet is based. Before a file is sent over the Internet to another computer, it is first broken up into "packets" of information. Each packet is sent individually to the same location, or IP address, as the other packets. When all the packets arrive at their final destination, TCP rearranges them into their original form.
